1,500 Hectare Multi Purpose Livestock/Game Farm
This uniquely conserved running Bonsmara cattle farm on the southern slopes of the Magaliesberg in North West Province, is only 85 km from Johannesburg
en route to Rustenburg, the Pilanesberg Game Reserve and the Sun City resort. The secure property, which has no throughway for vehicles and pedestrian traffic, can be converted to different types of secluded nature sanctuaries close to the city. It also has the added advantage of a moderate climate and regular rainfall.
The potential for the development of a game farm with lodges and other accommodation situated unobtrusively in different sections of the farm invites the development and eco-tourist entrepreneur with special foresight. The land has multiple possibilities as an eco-tourist sanctuary, with existing animal life, such as small buck, baboons, jackal, bush pigs and also leopard as baseline and more than enough natural sustenance for bigger game. The attractions include the astonishingly rich bird life and the plant species that are unique to this area. Hiking trails in the thick mountain slope vegetation, with special plant species marked on trails, is the vision that many have seen for this rigorously conserved stretch of the Magaliesberg.
In addition, conference or health/spa facilities in the heart of the bush, yet within an hour's drive from Johannesburg are a given. Not only will delegates enjoy the beauty and nurturing qualities of the natural environment, but they will also be able to view cultural historical
artifacts from the late iron-age and from the wars that were fought here. Remnants of late iron-age villages on two of the outcrops on the south western side of the land are an attraction for all who visit this farm.
The property, which includes 8 km of the mountain ridge, has been accumulated through decades of conservation efforts by the owners who have made it their goal to acquire land to consolidate part of the gem that is the Magaliesberg range. There are in all 21 title deeds, integrating this beautiful farm that ranges from the mountain ridge down into the fertile peach farming the valley. The main original farms, Roodekranz (red cliff), Wagenpadspruit (riverine where wagons
travelled through), and Boschfontein (bush spring/fountain) are connected and the property is now known as "Roodekranz", while some consider it to be the only real "Mohale's View" - for its view both from the mountain and of the mountain.
The farm is
fenced with 41 camps and three main entrances, the most scenic of which is the one from Breedsnek Pass, which is also the eastern boundary. Water is reticulated to each camp from seven working boreholes and from five catchments dams. A mountain spring becomes active after the first good seasonal rains and is for many who go there the primary picnic spot, often combined with abseiling the "red cliff" and a search for the elusive "fairy elephant's foot" succulent that grows on the ridge.
There are two main houses and one smaller uninhabited thatch cottage. The three staff houses are electrified, with running water. The spacious main house is built in "ranch style", with four bedrooms (one an outside guest room with WC), two bathrooms, a study, storeroom, pantry, kitchen, extra large lounge, dining room, spacious entrance lobby and passage, breakfast room and a verandah/porch on three sides. Beautiful wooden and tile finishes from demolition sites in Johannesburg in the 1960's were used to add to the stateliness of this proud home that was completed in the early 70's.
The second house, which has served as guesthouse for the family, consists of three bedrooms, dining room and kitchen, bathroom, lounge, two verandahs/porches (one in a secluded quadrangle) and an outside guest room with
en suite bathroom.
There are also numerous outbuildings on different parts of the farm.
The inclusion of the Bonsmara cattle stud, registered as "La Plata Bonsmara" and consisting of some of best of this breed in South Africa, may be negotiated.
